BRISTOL, R.I.Roger Williams University  Professor Sargon Donabed is leading the expansion of Middle East and Mediterranean studies through a book series partnership with  called Alternative Histories: Narratives from the Middle East and Mediterranean.

Launched in 2019, the series now includes more than 10 titles, with about two additional volumes expected each year. The most recent publications are Tunisia鈥檚 Andalusians: The Cultural Identity of a North African Minority by Marta Dom铆nguez D铆az and Syria鈥檚 Transnational Rebellion: Diaspora Politics and the Revolt of 1925鈥1927 by Reem Bailony.

Donabed, the editor for the series, said the project grew out of a desire to create space for 鈥渁lternative narratives鈥 often overlooked in mainstream history.

鈥淭o the best of my knowledge, no other series has been dedicated to giving voice to unknown or lesser-known communities, languages, cultures, and events,鈥 Donabed said. 鈥淓very idea and community has a story, and it鈥檚 the job of a good scholar to bring those stories to light.鈥

Alongside this work, Donabed is co-leading a forthcoming  series tentatively titled Perspectives in Assyrian Studies, which will publish one to two volumes annually. He also recently contributed as an academic consultant to  series, fact-checking Mesopotamian content for its new book release.
